The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provides comprehensive, no-fault personal injury cover for all New Zealand residents and visitors to New Zealand. If you injure yourself while playing sports, out working or in your home you are able to see certain therapists in NZ that can register your injury with ACC. ACC helps to pay for costs related to your claim such as physiotherapy, acupuncture, medical costs and radiology (X-rays and scans).
No, If you would like to lodge an ACC claim for an accident or injury, physiotherapists are able to do this directly for you on your first appointment.
Wounds, lacerations, sprains, strains, fractures, dislocations and work-related injuries. Most physical injuries are covered if they’re caused by:
• an accident
• a condition that comes on gradually because of your work (gradual process)
• medical treatment
• sexual assault or abuse
For further information refer to the ACC website or contact us and we can help guide you in this process.
If you have an approved ACC claim, ACC will fund part of the full consultation fee for ACC registered therapists (General Practitioners, Physiotherapists, Osteopaths, Acupuncturists and Chiropractors). We then require a surcharge to be paid to cover the remainder. The price will depend on the type of appointment you have. Refer to our charges page here for more information. Specialist appointments are covered fully by ACC if a referral from a health professional is obtained.
This depends on the therapist you are seeing. Physiotherapy and acupuncture appointments are 30 to 45 minutes. We do ask for people to arrive 5 minutes before the first appointment to complete some paper work giving you more time with the Physiotherapist.
On your first appointment the therapist will discuss with you a plan for rehabilitation and advise you on an expected time frame and suggested number of treatments required to meet your goals. Four to six sessions are usually required and if improvement is not seen then therapists can refer you to senior Physiotherapists or the Pain Specialists at the clinic.
A set number of treatments are funded by ACC depending on the area injured eg for a neck sprain there are up to 10 funded treatments available and for an ankle sprain there are up to 14. If the injury is more complicated, or there are other contributing factors that may contribute to the recovery, then the Physiotherapist will discuss this with you and can apply for further treatment if it is believed that progression can still be made. The additional treatment is not guaranteed and will be assessed by ACC on an individual basis.
Everybody’s insurance is different, so you are best to get in contact and discuss this with your provider directly. The pain specialists are Southern Cross accredited providers so if you have specialist cover the bill can be sent directly to Southern Cross healthcare.
How long will my appointment be?
Treatment times are normally 30 to 45 minutes however this can vary depending on the severity or complexity of your injury
Please bring loose, comfortable clothing with you to allow us to access the relevant area of your complaint. If you have been given a referral letter by another practitioner please bring this too, as well as any scans you may have (although we can often access these on our computer system).
