Biography

Dr Kanji is a Musculoskeletal Pain Specialist and Researcher who has experienced first hand chronic low back pain and chronic neck pain. He was in a motor vehicle accident at the age of five when he broke his hip. Over the past few decades he has experienced low back pain, nerve symptoms down the legs as well as neck pain and nerve symptoms down both arms at night.

Work Experience

Dr Kanji worked as a House Surgeon at Wellington Hospital from 1990 to 1992. Worked in General Practice in Australia and New Zealand. Started Musculoskeletal Medicine Practice full time in 2002.
Went to Newcastle Australia January 2003 to learn how to perform Cervical medial branch blocks and transforaminal steroid injections.
Dr Kanji worked at Southern Cross Specialist Centre from 2002 until 2013. He is currently working at The Sports and Pain Clinic, Wellington as a musculoskeletal pain specialist dealing with sports injuries and chronic pain conditions. Dr Giresh Kanji has completed his PhD titled “The sensory amplification of pain: The causation of headache disorders” at Massey University. The thesis investigated why people develop headache, the role of the migraine gene and sympathetic nervous system in chronic pain disorders. He is currently lead researcher in two low back pain trials. The trial design and ethics committee documentation is currently being completed. He is the chair of the Wellington Education and Self Treatment (WEST) research group which has started two randomised control trials to investigate a self treatment for lower back pain in 2013.
Work has included: . Designing rehabilitation programmes and been an assessor for the Back Study run by the ACC. Currently a Medical assessor for the ACC Independence allowance using the American Association Guides to impairment. Experience with injections- over the past seven years I have been using marcain injections for both myofascial trigger points, Joints and peripheral nerve blocks. Treatment has been provided nerve blocks for Complex regional pain syndromes, spinal and peripheral limb pain. Dr Kanji has trained in ultrasound guided injections in 2012 and performs all joint and tendon diagnosis and injections under ultrasound guidance.
